water to be effective. It needs to be in flowing coolant to be functional. Right now he might as well take the sensor and gauge and put it in a pond of water beside the car. No hot coolant from around the cylinders is flowing past the sensor to get any form of reading of the cylinder temps. He is just getting the temperature of the coolant that's sitting in the upper coolant hose. So a really accurate gauge or the shittiest one won't mean anything. They're all reading the coolant that is irrelevant.
